Ecstatically gemmy: Sensorial labor at the heart of the gem trade

The global gemstone market—valued at over $30 billion—sits at the intersection of extractive economies, luxury markets, and art worlds. Through an ethnography of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase , the largest of its kind in the world, this article examines the sensorial labor that transforms geological matter into high-value gems. In defining sensorial labor, we concentrate on the orchestrated work of display, lighting, and spatial design that produces the atmospheric conditions central to valuation. We show how atmospheres, as ecstatic, i.e., overflowing socio-spatial and visual phenomena, enhance emotional attachments by imbuing rocks with “gemminess,” while strategically, obscuring extractive violence, thus enabling commodification. By tracing how sensorial labor operates in the Showcase , the article contributes to sociological considerations of value, anthropological research on cultures of capitalism, and multidisciplinary readings of the tensions inherent in the commodification of space by offering a framework for understanding the role of sensory environments in legitimizing extractive economies in the so-called Anthropocene. It shows how capitalism operates not just through extraction and exchange, but through the orchestration of sensorial environments that render certain objects desirable and the violence at their origin socially acceptable.
