Résumé
The plasma smoothing effect in the interaction of a laser beam with a gas jet is experimentally demonstrated. This smoothing operates well below the thresholds for parametric instabilities and self-focusing; it increases with the gas density and is more efficient in the nonpreformed plasma case. It is explained by a new mechanism - the multiple scattering of the laser light on nonstationary density perturbations driven by ionization, the ponderomotive force, and localized electron heating.
