title = "Field monitoring of an experimental embankment constructed with two treated fine-grained soils",
abstract = "This paper presents and discusses the on-going field monitoring of an experimental embankment divided into two symmetrical sections constructed with two different fine-grained soils (a silty clay and an expansive clay) treated with lime and/or cement in the northeast of France. The field instrumentation included detailed monitoring of volumetric water content, matric suction and temperature within the embankment as well as measurements of meteorological data. The results suggested similarities in the suction daily variations in the two treated fine-grained soils. Even at the location of -0.75 m from the slope face the effect of evaporation was observed in the daily suction measurements. In general, no significant response to the rainfall events was observed during the dry period in the two treated soils. The rainfall events, recorded in 30 minutes period, showed a significant effect on the suction changes at the start of the wet period (i.e., after long dry period) in the two treated soils. The simplified estimation of atmospheric water balance is useful for suggesting the expected period of water deficit in the investigated site.",
