Résumé

The behaviour of the wake of a sphere towed in a stratified tank was studied experimentally to determine the internal gravity wave field generated. A transition was discovered between flows dominated by lee waves and flows governed by coherent structures, occurring at a critical Froude number of 4. This was associated with the appearance of coherent structures in the wake of the sphere which generated waves when they collapsed. (D.W.T.)
