Résumé

Optical functionalities, such as optical packet switching and wavelength conversion, have had little use in practice despite their potential benefits to data networks by lifting performance bottlenecks and curbing energy consumption. Enabling them requires network-level handling strategies to exploit their full capability in ways that are compatible with network paradigms. We explore such strategies, and quantify some of their benefits at the network level.
