N2 - We present numerical and experimental investigation of the effect that the input pulse chirp has on the energy transfer from 5 μJ fs-pulses at 800 nm to water. The chirp is seen to control efficiently the energy transfer and the geometrical properties of the excited plasma volumes. Agreement between simulations and experiments is obtained via a parametric study, the details of which are presented here. These results may find applications in the control of underwater bubble and sound wave formation, and also in laser surgery involving aqueous media.
