Résumé

In order to study wave-structure interactions for coastal applications (wave shoaling in front of the structure and breaking, run-up, overtopping and forces due to wave action), we examine the potential and limitations of two different numerical approaches, namely an extended Boussinesq-type finite difference model and the SPH Lagrangian numerical method in 2-D. These methods are evaluated and compared on two test-cases for which laboratory measurements are available (overtopping of a dyke by regular waves and wave transformation over a coral reef). It is shown that both approaches are able to correctly model the evolution of wave height and setup, while the SPH method offers a more precise prediction of hydrodynamics in breaking waves and overtopping waves.
