This chapter presents an introduction to the Target Problem. It contains a brief description of the origins of its name, an exposition of a historical background and an overview of different applications of this problem, settings, notations and most important concepts and results. We also briefly describe the problems studied in the subsequent chapters, putting their contributions in a general context.
