Résumé
A mesoscale advection towards the Alps and vertical transport above the Alps usually develops during fair weather conditions ("Alpine Pumping"). The field experiment VERTIKATOR (Vertical Exchange and Orography) was conducted in June/July 2002 in the Alps to study the development of this mountain-plain circulation and the initiation of convection and thunderstorms. Observations from the airborne 10.6 μm Doppler lidar WIND and the airborne 2μm Doppler lidar are presented together with numerical simulations. Observations and simulations could quantify the mass flux from the forelands to the Alps.
