Résumé

Sails are an example of fluid structure interaction (FS1), where the structural deformation, as well as the fluid dynamics, needs to be taken into account in order to analyse performances. The emphasis of this paper is placed on developing techniques that can study the dynamic behaviour of sails. This is necessary, especially when approaching downwind sails, where the nature of the flow is subjected to large separations and unsteady phenomena such as vortex shedding. Preliminary studies are presented about bluff body type flows, representative of spinnaker flows, and about typical Gennaker sections. From a structural perspective, the fabric is modelled with shells, rather than membranes. This approach shows considerable advantages, since these will capture buckling related phenomena such as wrinkling, which have to be treated with additional models for membrane based analysis. It is found that the unsteadiness and the presence of wrinkles can significantly alter the sail force
